Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declared a government holiday in the state on March 23, the day of Martyrs' Day.
On 23 March 1931, the great revolutionary Bhagat Singh was hanged,
who participated in the murder of a junior British police officer and an Indian head constable in mistaken retaliation for the death of an Indian nationalist.
He also participated in the massive symbolic bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi and a hunger strike in prison.
The sympathetic coverage in Indian owned newspapers turned him into a household name in the Punjab region,
Sukhdev and Rajguru were also hanged along with Bhagat Singh on 23 March 1931.
Revolutionary Bhagat Singh is also known as Shaheed-e-Azam.
A resolution was also passed in the Punjab Legislative Assembly to put the statues of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Babasaheb Ambedkar in the Legislative Assembly.
